Even the smallest changes make a difference.

Our Message

At Jem + Bea, we are committed to reducing the impact of our actions on the environment.  We believe it is our responsibility to take positive action now, in order to protect the planet for future generations.

Jem + Bea take a holistic approach to environmental issues and are committed to working towards more sustainable production, from the materials we source through to the packaging of our products.

Our Products

Recycled Nylon

Our JEM + BEA SUSTAINABLE range has been thoughtfully designed with the environmental issues facing our planet in mind, together with our signature Jem + Bea DNA throughout.

We have worked closely with our suppliers to incorporate more sustainable materials, particularly in the case of our nylons, many of which are certified by the GRS (Global Recycle Standard).

In 2019 we partnered with ECONYL® – world leaders in regenerated nylon yarn. The nylons used in our sustainable range have been expertly crafted from post-consumer waste – such as disused fishing nets, carpets and plastic bottles from the ocean and landfill. Using this regenerated nylon reduces energy consumption, reduces waste to landfills, conserves petroleum resources, helps clear our oceans and protect precious sea life.

Sustainable Leathers

We are passionate about our leather collection and strongly believe in the sustainability of ethically sourced leathers, as opposed to faux leather substitutes made from plastics. We create designs that are made to last and many of our customers can testify to the longevity of their Jem + Bea bags, taking them beyond the baby years.

Our leathers are sourced from sustainable farms and are crafted using only chrome-free tanning methods. This is a more gentle method which eliminates the need for this heavy metal.  All our tanneries carry the LWG (Leather Working Group) certification – see ‘Our partners in Sustainability’ for more information on this.

Our Packaging

All of our gift boxes, paper hangtags and external boxes are made from recycled paper pulp. We have sourced and designed biodegradable polybags (used to protect our bags in transit). These are completely compostable, avoiding the use of single use plastic polybags. In addition, we have reduced the amount of outer packaging on our bags such as the foam packaging around the handles and zip pulls which is often difficult to recycle.

Your Jem + Bea bag will still arrive beautifully packaged, just with less waste.

We would love for you to continue the cycle by reusing, repurposing or recycling our packaging when you have finished with it.

Our Partners in Sustainability

ECONYL®

Since 2019 we have been officially authorised to use ECONYL®, world leaders in sustainable yarns. Nylon waste, otherwise polluting the Earth, is transformed into ECONYL® regenerated nylon. It’s exactly the same as brand new nylon and can be recycled, recreated and remoulded again and again, meaning our eco bags are made without having to use precious new resources.

LWG – Leather Working Group

We are proud that all our leather tanneries are LWG approved and certified. The LWG is a not-for-profit organisation responsible for the world’s leading environmental certification for the leather manufacturing industry. LWG audit our tanneries to assess compliance in, amongst others areas – traceability, water-management, social responsibility and health & safety, only certifying those tanneries that meet their stringent standards.

Terracycle  www.terracycle.com

We are now working with TerraCycle, who are Eliminating the Idea of Waste® by recycling the ‘non-recyclable’. Bags and accessories that are beyond their useful life, that cannot be sold or repaired are sent to Terracycle where they expertly separate the component parts into metals, fibres and plastics. Each of these parts are then either safely composted or recycled thereby diverting our waste from landfills and incinerators each month.

Ecologi www.ecologi.com

We are working with Ecologi to make Jem + Bea a climate positive brand.

Our monthly donations to Ecologi help to tackle the climate crisis by offsetting our carbon footprint. Ecologi invest our donations into projects that remove more greenhouse gasses than our own carbon footprint puts in.

Each month we support a range of carbon reduction projects that are certified at the very highest level by Gold Standard. We also opted to contribute an additional donation to plant trees in the UK.

We recognise that there is more we can do and will strive to introduce more sustainable practices wherever possible going forward.

This is our commitment to you. To our children. To the environment.
